Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1
Kochi
Fort Kochi on foot: the Chinese fishing nets, St Francis — where Vasco da Gama was first buried — Santa Cruz Basilica, Mattancherry Palace and the synagogue at Jew Town.
Day 2
Kochi → Munnar
Met at Cochin International and straight up into the Western Ghats. The road climbs past the Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls and into cardamom country; by the last hour the tea has taken over the hillsides entirely.
Day 3
Munnar
A full day in the tea country. Eravikulam for the Nilgiri tahr, Mattupetty dam and lake, Echo Point, Kundala, and the Tea Museum where they still roll a batch by hand. Top Station if the cloud lifts.
Day 4
Munnar → Thekkady
Down through the hills into spice country. The afternoon is Periyar's: a walk through a working cardamom and pepper plantation with the grower, and the optional lake boat ride before dusk.
Day 5
Thekkady → Alleppey
To the backwaters and aboard the houseboat around midday. The rest of the afternoon is Vembanad — paddy bunds, village landings, fishermen working the Chinese nets — and dinner cooked on board as the light goes.
Day 6
Alleppey → Kovalam
South to the coast for Lighthouse, Hawa and Samudra beaches.
Day 7
Kovalam & Poovar
A day trip south to the Poovar estuary and its mangroves, with the rest of the day on the beach.
Day 8
Kovalam → Kanyakumari
To the southern tip: the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, the Thiruvalluvar statue, the Gandhi Mandapam and a sunset over three seas.
Day 9
Kanyakumari → Madurai
North to Madurai and the Meenakshi Amman temple — the gopurams, the thousand-pillar hall, and the evening ceremony. Thirumalai Nayak Palace as well.
Day 10
Madurai → Rameswaram
Across the Pamban bridge to the island. The Ramanathaswamy temple corridors, Agni Theertham, the Kalam memorial and Dhanushkodi at the far end.
Day 11
Rameswaram → Thanjavur
Inland to the Chola capital and the Brihadeeswarar temple, a thousand years old and still the reason to come. The palace and the Saraswathi Mahal library too.
Day 12
Thanjavur → Puducherry
To the old French quarter — White Town, the promenade, the Aurobindo ashram, and Auroville with the Matrimandir viewpoint.
Day 13
Puducherry → Ooty
Up into the Nilgiris. Ooty lake, the botanical gardens, Doddabetta and a tea factory on the way in.
Day 14
Ooty → Mysuru
Down through Bandipur to Mysuru. The palace — lit on a Sunday evening — Chamundi hill, St Philomena's and Brindavan gardens.
Day 15
Mysuru → Coorg
Into the coffee country. Abbey Falls, Raja's Seat for the sunset, Madikeri fort and a plantation walk with the grower.
Day 16
Coorg → Bengaluru
The last drive, to Bengaluru for the flight. Bangalore Palace, Vidhana Soudha, Cubbon Park or Lalbagh if there is an afternoon to spare.
